Xeomin®

Written by Dr. Ellen Gendler

As our skin ages, we gradually begin to lose the chemicals that keep skin firm, and years of facial muscle use means the skin in these areas tends to readily develop into creases and folds. The appearance of these wrinkles can be distressing or concerning for some, especially if they believe themselves to look older or more unhappy than they really are.

However, there are non-surgical and non-invasive treatments available for these lines, including Xeomin® – an FDA approved anti-wrinkle injection. This, alongside a range of medical and cosmetic treatments, is offered at the Gendler Dermatology office in Manhattan. Under the leadership of board-certified dermatologist Dr. Ellen Gendler, we pride ourselves on providing excellent services and to help our patients look and feel their best.

What is Xeomin®?

Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA), is a botulinum injection, similar to Botox or Dysport. However, Xeomin® is a highly purified neurotoxin – made through a unique manufacturing process that isolates the therapeutic component of the molecule and removes the accessory proteins that don’t play an active role in treatment.

Like other anti-wrinkle injections, Xeomin® blocks the release of the chemical messenger acetylcholine, which conveys signals from the nerve terminals and causes the muscle fibers to contract. This results in the decreased activity of these muscles, achieving a more relaxed and youthful look. Not all of the nerve terminals are affected by Xeomin® or any botulinum toxin, so the muscles can still contract, though less forcefully, allowing you to still create usual facial expressions.

What is Xeomin used for?

Xeomin® is most often used in the treatment of glabellar lines, also known as frown lines or ‘eleven’ lines. These can deepen with age, and become noticeable even when someone isn’t frowning. While Xeomin® is predominantly used for glabellar lines, it can sometimes be used for crow’s feet lines around the eyes, and forehead wrinkles.

The ideal candidate for Xeomin®

If the moderate to severe appearance of your frown lines are of concern to you, Xeomin® could be a treatment option for you. Because of the purity of Xeomin®’s formula, it is also an option for those who have built up some resistance to Botox or Dysport, and with a smaller number of molecules, there is less of a chance of reaction with the toxin.

However, Xeomin® may not be suitable for you if:

  • You are allergic to Xeomin®, any of its ingredients, or you have had a reaction to Xeomin® previously.
  • You are allergic to cow’s milk protein.
  • If you have had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin injection or product, such as Myobloc, Botox, or Dysport.
  • You have a skin infection where the injections will be administered.
  • You are under 18 years of age.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You take certain medications used for muscle spasms.

At your consultation at Dr. Gendler’s New York office, she will discuss your goals and expectations with you, as well as create a personalized treatment plan, which details which treatment or treatments she recommends, and how many.
